Steven Lash: Medical tourism at a glance

Steven Lash Image Credit: satoriworldmedical.files.wordpress.com

High quality treatment and cost-effective, immediate medical procedures—these are the lures of medical tourism. Respected health travel operator Steven Lash of Satori World Medical probably said it all when he corrected the wrong understanding that “only the US or other First World countries is the front of all clinical excellence.”

There’s no monopoly of excellence. But the real underlying issue in healthcare is the diversity of interests at various fronts. Medical tourism comes as an international option to an issue being fiercely fought at home.

While medical tourism is not an alternative to the expensive healthcare predicament, it’s a fresh, effective option against the crippling effects of recession and higher cost of medical care. Many embraced the idea and innovation behind the trend. Steven Lash, who founded Satori World Medical in 2008, took notice of the ripples of need for better and affordable healthcare. As the demand swelled in the face of recession and tangled issues on healthcare reform at home, Lash took lead. Today, Satori is at the helm of the global explosion of medical tourism. “Now, people realize that there is quality health care outside the United States," he said.

With the way the industry is faring so far, it’s probably the best, healthy thing that could happen at all.

Satori World Medical is the world’s first global healthcare network and service company designed to deliver high quality healthcare services, at a fraction of the cost. In May 2011, Ms. Davis traveled to the Centre Metropolitain de Chirurgie in Montreal, Canada for a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. The operation was performed by Dr. Nicolas Christou, an internationally renowned and accomplished bariatric surgeon and a part of the Satori World Medical’s network of hospitals and physicians.

Ms. Davis experienced tremendous cost savings by having the surgery done in one of the world-class hospitals under Satori’s network. Her medical expenses and her companion’s airfare, hotel, ground transportation, and insurance were entirely covered under Satori’s agreement with the patient’s healthcare plan.

Lee Davis, the patient’s mother, was asked why they chose Satori. She answered, “Initially because of the financial advantage.” She added that she also did some research and found nothing but praises for the company. She also pointed out that what stood out in the whole experience was the excellent customer service and that everything was taken care of by Satori.

Conceiving through technology: Satori World Medical and in vitro fertilization

Satori World Medical is the leading company that promotes medical tourism through its programs which give people the chance to obtain quality healthcare at low costs.

This latest blog entry will talk about in vitro fertilization, one of the procedures offered under Satori’s program.

Infertility or primary infertility is referred to as the inability of a couple to become pregnant after a year of actively engaging in sexual intercourse without using any birth control methods. In the US, there are more than six million people affected by this.

Satori World Medical, Image Credit: Foxnews.com -- URL: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/08/24/obesity-is-bad-for-sperm/
Satori World Medical Image Credit: Foxnews.com

These people then resort to other techniques on how to become pregnant. One of which is in vitro fertilization (IVF), a technique that became a success in the US in 1981.

Satori World Medical paves way for the globalization of healthcare through its International Centers of Excellence in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, and Puerto Rico.

This type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) involves five basic steps:

Step 1. Super ovulation

Every month, women produce one egg. With the aid of fertility drugs, the ovaries are able to produce more eggs, thus called super ovulation. At this stage, women regularly have transvaginal ultrasounds to check the ovaries and hormones.

Satori World Medical, Image Credit: Discovery.com -- URL: http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/curiosity/topics/conception-through-birth-pictures.htm
Satori World Medical Image Credit: Discovery.com

Step 2. Egg retrieval

This step involves a minor surgery called follicular aspiration, wherein a thin needle, which is connected to a suction device, is inserted in the vagina and into the ovary and sacs to pull the eggs and fluid off the follicle. For women who cannot produce eggs despite the fertility drugs, donated eggs may be an option.

Satori World Medical boasts of an innovative Business and Care Model, which was formulated by its CEO and founder Steven Lash.

Step 3. Insemination and Fertilization

The sperm and best quality eggs are placed in an environmentally controlled chamber. The process of mixing is called insemination. According to experts, the sperm enters the eggs a few hours after insemination. However, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which involves injecting the sperm directly into an egg, is sometimes done when fertilization is low.

Step 4. Embryo culture

The divided fertilized eggs become embryos. Experts at Satori World Medical agree that a normal embryo should have active cells that are actively dividing. At this stage, couples may agree to have an embryo checked for any genetic disorder that the child may obtain.

Step 5. The transfer

Three to five days after the egg retrieval and fertilization, the embryo is placed into the woman’s womb through a thin tube (catheter).

The hours of waiting at the airport and the actual travel, although seated 90 percent of the time, leave travelers feeling exhausted. To avoid this weariness and boredom, travelers can apply these tips on how to enjoy travel time:

Satori World Medical was awarded by Entrepreneur Magazine as Trailbazers and Trendsetters of 2010.

- Flight preparations. Booking a flight is more convenient now, as compared to before, thanks to the Internet. Travelers can even choose their preferred seat according to its availability. For long flights, an aisle or exit row seat is great for more leg room.

- The early bird. It’s always best to arrive ahead of time to avoid being pressured at the check-in counter or when something unexpected—like delayed or cancelled flights—comes up.

- Bringing a good book. Travelers can make the most of the travel time by immersing themselves in a good piece of literature. For those who can’t read while in the plane due to motion sickness, audio books are considered great alternatives.

Satori World Medical’s Business and Care Model is comprised of four pillars of excellence, namely, quality care, health and shared wealth program, world-class customer service, and companion care.

- Standing and walking. Long flights can be a pain, quite literally. To avoid back pain and the like, travelers are encouraged to walk or stand once in a while along the aisle or at the standing area used by the flight attendants.

- Sleeping well. Travelers are advised to get ample sleep, not only during the flight but before traveling, to avoid feeling exhausted during the trip especially if they find it hard to sleep in a semi-sitting position.

- Freshening up. Passengers may ask the flight attendants about their expected time of arrival so as to have time to freshen up— wash their face and brush their teeth in the lavatory.
